the hittites and iron
One of the achievements the Hittites is most well known for is their use of iron, which helped to transition the Bronze Age into the Iron Age. While most civilizations used the soft metal bronze, the Hittites used iron for weapons, which is a much stronger and more durable material, and yet still soft enough to work with and use to make tools. Although the Hittites did sell iron weapons to other civilization in West Asia, they still kept it their secret for a very long time.
One of the reasons we know the Hittites held iron to a very high value is found in a letter sent by a Hittite king to a king of another empire, with which he sent an iron dagger attached.
