Suppiluliumas i
king of the hittites
Suppiluliumas I was king of the Hittite empire who began his reign in 1380 and gained the civilization imperial power. He took over after his predecessor, Tudhaliyas III, the former king of the Hittites. He started his leadership by rebuilding the Hittite capitol of Hattusas. His reign took over much of the Middle East for nearly forty years. He is best known for challenging and defeating the Egyptian empire for control over the land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Euphrates River. His successor was his son Arnuwanda II.
Rise to power
Suppiluliumas I started out as a Hittite general. He defeated a few of the empire's greatest enemies, including Azzi-Hayasa and Kaska people. Shortly after Tudhaliyas III took the throne, he was overthrown by Suppiluliumas. Shortly after, he married his sister and daughter away to the Maskhuiluwa people to keep good terms with them. His wife was a Babylonian princess.
the fall
Suppiluliumas most notably had difficulties with the empire of Mitanni, although he managed later on in life to sign a treaty with their leader. Revolt and political turmoil stirred when his son, Prince Zannanza, died on the way to marry the widow of the Egyptian king Nibhururiya, thus taking away his chances of ruling Egypt with her. Believing there had been foul play, Suppiluliumas and the Pharoah Az exchanged many arguments over the subject. After taking several Egyptian prisoners, Suppiluliumas contracted the plague from some of them and died in 1322 BC.
